Honeybees are on the decline in Virginia. A mysterious syndrome called colony collapse disorder and cold
weather hit the state’s bee population hard last winter. Winter honeybee losses have averaged 31 percent over the past decade. The agriculture community is feeling the sting. The Virginia Farm Bureau reports that the number of bee colonies in the state had declined to 5,000 in 2010, down from more than 80,000 in 1950.
