A Virginia-based Coast Guard Reserve unit has been deployed to the Middle East. The Coast Guard says Port Security Unit 305 will provide seaward security at strategic port locations around the North Arabian Gulf as what might be considered part of the Obama administrations “more realistic” vision for the military. According to a Reuters report, a shift in the strategic review plans to cut tens of thousands of ground troops and invest more in air and sea power over the next decade. The Portsmouth- Reserve unit joined the Navy’s Maritime Expeditionary Squadron for training exercises which includes responding to terrorist attacks.
