Amherst Extablishes New Zoning District

The Amherst Board of Supervisors voted to establish a new zoning district. During a joint public hearing last week the supervisors along with the Planning Commission approved a Residential Mixed Use District for the area between the James River, Virginia 210, U.S. 29 business and Virginia 163. According to the New Era progress the new standards are intended to permit a compatible mix of uses in a single structure or group of structures. Planners say they believe the decision will help revitalize Old Town Madison Heights because it will permit more regulatory flexibility.
