Despite approval nearly a year ago by the Bedford County Board of Supervisors to approve a transfer of land to the Bedford County Public Service Authority; the authority is still waiting to acquire the 50-acre parcel of land in Moneta for a regional water treatment plant. According to the Smith Mtn Eagle, the existing plant is near capacity, and the demand for water from the plant continues to increase in the region. Officials with the Authority say once the land deal is finalized the agency will continue with obtaining the permits necessary to expand the water intake facility. Planners say it will be developed in phases. The project is expected to be completed by December of 2016.
