History Making Deputy Retires In Amherst County

After 40 years on the force, the first African American sheriff’s deputy in Amherst County is retiring. Sixty-seven-year-old Major Alfred Rose actually handed in his badge last week but not before he became second in charge of the office to the sheriff himself. Rose tells the “News and Advance” that he remembers early in his career that a black inmate called him an Uncle Tom, and he also recalls putting down a race riot and providing protection for Ku Klux Klan demonstrators.
