There are now 18 confirmed cases of fungal meningitis in Virginia. That’s up from 11 cases on Saturday. One Virginian has died. Nationwide, there are 91 confirmed cases, up from 64 Saturday. More people are also being treated for the infection at area hospitals. According to News 7, Lewis Gale has seen 73 patients and 24 of them are currently in the hospital because of fungal meningitis. Carilion says its doctors have evaluated about 75 patients for possible meningitis. Sixteen of those people have been admitted for treatment.
The pharmacy that distributed the steroid linked to the outbreak of fungal meningitis has issued a voluntary recall of all of its products. The New England Compounding Center company said in a news release that the move was taken out of an abundance of caution because of the risk of contamination. It says there is no indication that any other products have been contaminated.
