One person is dead in Salem and dozens of people were being evaluated at local hospitals Thursday for a rare form of meningitis as a Roanoke outpatient center said it had provided patients with a steroid injection linked to a widening U.S. outbreak. State epidemiologist Dr. David Trump said Thursday the patients in two southwest Virginia clinics received injections of the now-recalled back pain medication since July. Nationally, at least five people have died and 35 sickened.
