Special Prosecutor Assigned to Altavista Shooting

A special prosecutor has been appointed in the shooting death of an 83-year-old woman by an Altavista police officer. Investigators have said Towler was shot after she pointed her weapon at officers who’d responded to her home for a 911 call. Her family says she was NOT a threat to police. The special prosecutor, Roanoke Commonwealth’s Attorney Don Caldwell tells the News and Advance he will review the outcome of a State Police Investigation and determine whether charges should be filed.
