Deer Related Crashes Are Costly

The number of deer related accidents spike every fall. Drivers in Virginia are 10th on the list of deer-vehicle collisions. That is up two spots, from the 12th-spot ranking in 2011. Virginia drivers have a 1 in 103 chance of colliding with a deer. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) there are 1.5 million car accidents involving deer per year. And, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the average collision cost for this type of accident is $2,800, with the figure leaping to $10,000 if injury is involved.
