UPDATE: Exotic Animal Ownership Laws Could Change In Virginia

UPDATE:
Elephants, cape buffaloes, rhinos and chimpanzees – they’re all among a list of proposed restricted species in Virginia. The state’s Dangerous Animals Initiative on Wednesday recommended those animals and more for a proposed list of restricted exotic, potentially dangerous animals.

11/28/12: A committee of state officials and animal protection advocates is expected to deliver its recommendations this week on exotic and potentially dangerous animals. Members of the Dangerous Animals Initiative are meeting today in Richmond for what is scheduled to be their final meeting. The Virginia initiative has agreed on oversight of large exotic animals but is struggling over primates. Owners of primates are resisting additional oversight. The recommendations will be presented to the legislature and the governor.
