Monacan Indian Nation Chief Sharon Bryant was one of several dignitaries on hand with Gov. Bob McDonnell during a ceremony last week, at which the governor proclaimed November as American Indian Heritage Month. Six of Virginia’s tribes, including the Monacans, still are seeking federal recognition, which would entitle them to benefits made available to hundreds of other tribes nationwide. The measure passed the House of Representatives, and the Senate has not acted on it. President Barack Obama has said he would sign it.
