Expect some popular spots along the parkway and in the national forests in the in our area to close until next spring. The U.S. Forest Service will temporarily close some recreation areas and roads for the winter including some located in Amherst, Bedford, Nelson, and Rockbridge counties. More than 100 miles of national forest roads in these counties will remain open year round. The George Washington and Jefferson National Forests stretch along the Appalachian Mountains, extending from one end of Virginia to the other and even crossing into parts of West Virginia and Kentucky. Many roads along the scenic route will remain open through the remainder of the fall season but will close early January. Visit www.fs.usda.gov for more information.
