The Chatham man who was convicted in September for killing a neighbor while he was out walking his dog last December will spend a year in jail. 63 year old Harry Franklin Hale Jr., was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and shooting from a vehicle in the death of 57 year old Richie Pope, of Chatham. Hale, a former Hargrave Military Academy shooting team leader, claimed he was shooting at a deer, but instead struck and killed Pope on Dec. 29, 2011. A judge this month sentenced Hale to 10 years in prison with nine years suspended; he was also ordered to pay Pope’s wife, $1,000 a month in restitution for the next eight years.
