Altavista officials are hoping the New Year will bring the town answers on how successful alternative options have been in resolving the PCB problem at the wastewater treatment plant’s emergency overflow pond. Testing is ongoing on how poplar and willow trees will break down the PCBs and on another method using microorganisms and a carbon material at the six-acre pond. The town has a deadline of early 2014 to remove the sludge and meet the standards of clean up established by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality.
