Beware Of Tax Refund Card Phone Scam

A phone scam has surfaced targeting to the new tax refund debit card. The Virginia Department of Taxation says the scam is not related to the security of the “Way2Go card or any information taxpayers submit to the department. Joel Davison, told the MorningLine today, that the department is working with the telephone companies involved, as well as the attorney general’s office, to get to the bottom of this issue; describing the m/o of the scam; warning of automated calls being made to individuals telling them their card is locked for security reasons.” then tries to get the listener to give out personal information. The department says this is a phone scam and that it never makes automated calls or solicits personal information in this manner. Paper check refunds will no longer be available. The debit card can be used the same way as a prepaid MasterCard for shopping, ordering online or paying bills online.
