After visiting the best gardens in the world for the past fifteen years, Robert will share images from those gardens along with the secrets of taking great pictures. If you’re a serious photographer or just take pictures for fun, there’s lots to learn about this digital photography age.

‘Garden Photography Around The World’ – Robert McDuffie

Robert McDuffie is a landscape architect whose primary focus is on small scale landscape design and contracting. He teaches classes in landscape design, construction, his-tory, and computer applications. He also directs a study abroad program in the department for university and continuing education students. He conducts workshops and presentations on a wide range of subjects pertaining to landscape design. His scholarly activities center around the use of computer technologies to enhance communication in the area of design, particularly in the application of QuickTime VT panoramas to document historic land-scapes and gardens. As a landscape architect, Mr. McDuffie specializes in the design of public and private gardens for individuals and institutions.

Robert McDuffie was the 2008 Wine Award recipient, one of Virginia Tech’s most prestigious teaching awards.

Breakout Sessions/Speakers

Breakout sessions will be assigned. Please provide your 1st through 6th choice on the reverse side of this pam-phlet. The 3 session assignments are de-pendent upon space limitations and will be assigned on a first come first serve basis with no exceptions, so please re-turn your registration in a timely manner.

  1. Rose Propagation – Lynchburg Grows
    Lynchburg Grows propagators will conduct a hands-on rose propagation workshop with historic Lynchburg’s Schenkel Roses. Learn how to select the best plant material, how to prepare the cuttings, and how to root them. They will also discuss how to grow the rooted cuttings into plants that are ready to be planted in the garden. Workshop participants will have the opportunity to take and stick a few cuttings of their own to take home with them.
  2. Shade Gardening – Joe Pond, Hill City Master Gardeners
    If your yard is dark when the sun is out. examine and learn about plants that will tolerate shade and those that need shade. There will also be landscape tips and fun plant facts and then even you can have a made-in-the-shade garden.
  3. The Ins and Outs of Soil – Bruce Jones / Scott Baker, VCE
    Learn about soil as an ecosystem, highlighting the benefits of a diversity of micro and macro organisms in the soil and how those organisms improve soil structure, soil health, nutrient availability, and how different management techniques affect that ecosystem. This workshop will also assess soil health and small scale solutions in the urban/rural interface.
  4. Arrangements that You Can Eat – Melanie Barrow / Jennifer Ligon, VCE
    Learn how to make flower arrangements, but ones that taste great and that are healthy for you! You will learn the art of making an arrangement, similar to flower arrangements, with fresh fruit such as, pineapple, bananas, melons, grapes, oranges, apples, and strawberries.
  5. Habitat at Home© – DGIF Habitat Facilitator
    If you build it, they will come! What is beautiful in nature can be beautiful in our outdoor living spaces, too, and through habitat gardening principles you can create beauty and inspire others to appreciate unique and diverse Virginia.
  6. Seed Saver – Todd Scott/ Kevin Camm, VCE
    Get hands-on experience in the methods you need to successfully grow, harvest, save, and share your own garden seed.

Registration

One registration per person – $35/Lunch included. Registration must be received by February 11, 2013. Seating is limited; early registration highly recommended for class selections. No registration(s) will be available at the door. There will be a $50 service fee for all returned checks.
