Former Employees Take School Board To Court

The Halifax County School Board is facing a lawsuit– Over 100 former public school employees who are Local Optional Retirement Plan recipients, filed the complaint on Tuesday. Media outlets report the school board’s purpose in adopting the optional retirement plan was to encourage early retirement as a budget cutting and cost saving measure. But, According to court documents, school board members breached its contract by voting to terminate the program in July. The plaintiffs are asking the court for a declaratory judgment confirming the school board’s contractual obligation to the program’s receivers and ordering the school board to reinstate the program and reimburse them for attorney fees.
