Ways to improve roads and the rails in Southwest Virginia are included in Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell’s additions to his transportation wish list. Among the projects that would receive funding are a new I-81 bridge over the New River in Montgomery County which would cost 47-million-dollars and the extension of passenger rail service to Roanoke at a cost of 102-million dollars. The plan also calls for several bridge replacements in Roanoke, Montgomery, Bedford and Franklin counties, and reconstruction of a drainage structure on a road crossing Mud Lick Creek in Roanoke County.
