Lawmakers Request Funding For Payment To Eugenics Survivors

Lawmakers say Virginia should set a new example on sterilization. More than 30 states passed legislation modeled after Virginia’s 1924 law that sterilized 7,259 people in state mental-health institutions. Delegates say the practice calls for more than an apology and urge The General Assembly and the Governor to take decisive action to right a decades-long policy by setting aside $1 million to provide $50,000 payments to survivors of the science known as eugenics.
