According to statistics from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, patients at Lynchburg General spend an average of 77 minutes in the Emergency room before being seen by a healthcare professional. Centra Health has implemented new federal measures to lessen the wait time in the Emergency Department. In 2011, for the first time, CMS began breaking down the specifics. The first set of data, released last year revealed everything from how long it takes before pain medication is administered, to the average length of time before admission. By the end of this year, Centra will have a new 14 bed clinical decision unit. The CDU will serve patients whose conditions require several hours of care, but ultimately may not need admission
