A Lynchburg judge this week certified a charge of second-degree murder against a city man accused of strangling another man during a fight on Fifth Street last summer. 36 year old Shawn Johnson of Lynchburg turned himself in shortly after the early morning incident on Aug. 12 and police charged him in the death of Thomas Belford. Witnesses testified during a preliminary hearing on Tuesday that they saw a fight between the two men and Johnson ended up in control with his arms around Belford. A medical examiner determined Belford died as a result of bare-handed strangulation. A grand jury will decide whether to indict Johnson Feb. 4.
