New Resolution Sparks Opposition By Amherst Supervisors

Officials in Amherst are asking the county’s legislative delegation to oppose a proposed resolution that cites livestock production as a major cause of pollution and thus calls for the last week of April to be designated as “VegWeek”. The Board of Supervisors say the resolution is factually incorrect and attacks one industry in order to promote another. The New Era Progress reports, over 10,000 beef cattle are raised on 460 farms throughout the county. According to the Farm Bureau, in addition to cattle, Amherst farmers also grow apples, hay and grains– overall generating $6.4 million in cash receipts. A letter has been sent to Sen. Thomas Garrett, Del. Ben Cline and Del. Scott Garrett.
