Governor Says He Has Not Softened To Medicaid

The expansion of the state’s Medicaid program became one of the most contentious issues debated in the General Assembly. Eventually the House and Senate adopted budget amendments and created a special ten member joint legislative Commission that negotiates the flexibility in how Medicaid is administered in Virginia. When asked about the issue, Governor Bob McDonnell, who leaves office in January, insisted that he has not officially signed off on an expansion of Medicaid; reiterating that the program must undergo significant reforms at the federal and state levels if Virginia is to expand coverage.
