As vacationers set out to kick off summer this Memorial Day weekend; experts aren’t expecting a resounding start to the travel season by air and suspect most, if they leave town at all, will likely take to the roads instead. According to AAA an estimated 34-million Americans will journey 50 miles or more from home. As Americans hit the highways over the next few days, they’ll find that gas prices are few cents higher than last year. The average price of fuel throughout Virginia is around $3.40. If you’re planning an out of state road trip–The national average price is about $3.66 a gallon.

The summer travel season kicks off on this Memorial Day weekend—and so too, unfortunately, come motor vehicles crashes, injuries and deaths…but according to experts, many fatalities could be prevented. Regular seat belt use saves thousands of lives across the state each year. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration statistics show that in 2011, seat belts saved an estimated 272 lives in Virginia. An additional 112 lives could be saved with 100 percent seat belt use. Law enforcement officers remind motorists that it’s the law to buckling up and to ensure that everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained.

A twenty-four hour patrol blitz is underway with police on the lookout for boozers and non-belters. State and local law enforcement have partnered in an effort to eliminate or at the very least reduce unrestrained injuries and fatalities. Officers are hitting the road today to aggressively enforce traffic laws, particularly seat belts and child safety seats, as part of the Click It Or Ticket campaign. The Central Virginia Highway Traffic Safety Board will likely hold checkpoints on Rt.460 and Rt. 29 and multiple feeder roads. Experts say men are more likely NOT to use seat belts. Statistics show, of the 305 unrestrained fatalities in Virginia last year, 95 were men between the ages of 18-35.
