Authorities are still sorting out why a Virginia Tech police officer was killed in a campus parking lot by a gunman who then apparently shot himself to death. The university on Thursday identified the officer as Deriek W. Crouse, a 39-year-old Army veteran and married father of five who joined the campus police force about six months after the 2007 shooting rampage that left 33 people dead.
Crouse was killed after pulling a driver over in a traffic stop. The gunman, who wasn’t involved in the traffic stop, walked into the parking lot and ambushed the officer. Police say ballistics tests have confirmed that the officer and a man suspected
in his slaying were shot by the same handgun. The Virginia State Police said in a news release early Friday that the tests have “officially linked the two fatal shootings.”
State police said a review of Officer Deriek Crouse’s in-car
video showed a male suspect with a handgun at the officer’s car at
the time of the shooting Thursday afternoon. Crouse had pulled over
a motorist, and police suspect that the gunman killed Crouse and
then took his own life nearby.
The press release says clothing found inside a discarded
backpack recovered by Blacksburg police seems to match that of the
male subject in the officer’s video. Police said they were awaiting
confirmation of the deceased suspect’s identity as well as autopsy
results from the medical examiner in Roanoke.
Before it became clear that the gunman in Thursday’s attack was dead, the school locked down the campus and used a high-tech alert system to warn students and faculty members to stay indoors.

RELATED STORY:
150 Attend Candlelight Vigil

About 150 students gathered silently for a candlelight vigil at Virginia Tech after a police officer was gunned down and the shooter apparently killed himself on campus.
The students showed up Thursday night on a field facing the
stone plaza memorial for the victims of the 2007 massacre. In that
bloodbath, 33 people were killed in the deadliest mass shooting in
modern U.S. history.
Though the official candlelight vigil was moved to Friday
evening, many turned out anyway to show their support. One student
came forward to invite everyone back for Friday night’s event. He
shouted, “Let’s go!” The crowd responded, “Hokies!”

Glenn Beck is one of America’s leading radio and television personalities. His quick wit, candid opinions and engaging personality have made The Glenn Beck Program the third highest rated radio program in America and Glenn Beck, one of the most successful new shows on the Fox News Channel. His unique blend of modern-day storytelling and insightful views on current events allowed him to achieve the extraordinary feat of having #1 New York Times bestsellers in both fiction and non-fiction. Beck also stars in a live stage show and is the publisher of Fusion magazine. Online, he is the editor of GlennBeck.com and the publisher of TheBlaze.com.

While Beck entered the media world as a DJ at the tender age of 13, everything changed when he found a new vision of his career – talk radio. In 2002, he launched The Glenn Beck Program on just 47 stations with the mission to make listeners “feel goodness from my show and accept me for who I am, flaws and all.” Nothing has been the same since.

Today, just a few years later, his radio show can be heard across the country on over 400 stations, his television show sets ratings records, his books reach the top of bestseller lists and he travels across the country performing his live stage show to sold-out audiences. Across all of these mediums, Beck connects with his fans in a whole new way, inspiring and entertaining them with his humor, hard-hitting interviews and honest tales about his life.

Beck’s radio show, The Glenn Beck Program, is syndicated by Premiere Radio Networks and is the third highest-rated national radio talk show among adults ages 25 to 54. Beck was the recipient of the 2008 Marconi Award for Network/Syndicated Personality of the Year from the National Association of Broadcasters.

Beck’s self-titled topical talk show on the FOX News Channel debuted on January 19th, 2009 to over 2.4 million viewers. This incredible launch built off the success of Beck’s nightly TV show on CNN Headline News, which he hosted from 2006-2008. During those two years, the show grew by more than 200% in viewership in both the 7pm and 9pm timeslots.

Beck is the author of six consecutive #1 New York Times Bestsellers including his latest book, the thriller The Overton Window. When The Christmas Sweater, his first novel, debuted at #1 on the fiction list, Beck became one of a handful of authors to write books that reached #1 on both the fiction and non-fiction NYT lists.

Beck often travels across the country on a live stage tour and has attracted over 250,000 fans in nearly 40 different markets. His web site, GlennBeck.com, receives millions of visitors a month.

Beck began his career in radio at the age of 13 in Seattle, and grew up in nearby Mount Vernon. After graduating high school, Beck landed jobs as a Top 40 DJ at stations across the country, from Baltimore and Houston, to Phoenix and New Haven, CT.

But at the age of 30, Beck lost his passion for radio – and everything else – as he was consumed by alcoholism and drug addiction. Coming to terms with his past and staying sober shifted his life direction. He found new love (his second wife, Tania) and religion (he was baptized Mormon) and decided he would pursue a career in talk radio.

Soon after, Beck received a call from an agent interested in representing him. Days later, he had an offer to host his own talk radio show on WFLA-AM in Tampa, Florida. Beck inherited the 18th placed position at WFLA-AM and took it to the #1 position in his first year, giving the station its highest ratings ever.

Within 18 months, Premiere Radio Networks, the leading radio syndication company in the country, offered Glenn the opportunity to go national. In January 2002, The Glenn Beck Program debuted on 47 stations. Only a few years later, the show is now heard on over 400 stations and on Sirius XM satellite Radio.

Beck’s production company, Mercury Radio Arts, produces or co-produces his radio, TV, live events, publishing and digital media projects. Founded in 2002, Mercury is based in New York, NY.

Glenn is married with four kids.

Sean Hannity is a multimedia superstar, spending four hours a day every day reaching out to millions of Americans on radio, television and internet.

The Sean Hannity Radio Show has over 500 affiliates nationwide and counting. Sean is heard by roughly 13.5 million loyal listeners a week making him the second most listened to talk show host in America, according to Talkers Magazine. Hannity has been the recipient of 2 Marconi Awards for Nationally Syndicated Radio Host of the Year and is a three-time consecutive winner of the Radio & Records National Talk Show Host of The Year Award (‘03, ’04, ‘05).

Sean is an accomplished author with two #1 best-sellers. His first book, “Let Freedom Ring: Winning the War of Liberty over Liberalism,” rode the NY Times best-seller list for a remarkable 17 weeks. Hannity’s more recent book, “Deliver Us from Evil: Defeating Terrorism, Despotism, and Liberalism,” debuted at #1 on the NY Times best-seller list and held strong for five consecutive weeks. Sean’s latest book, “Conservative Victory,” released in 2010, quickly became #1 on the NY Times best-seller list as well. More information about “Conservative Victory” can be found here.

Sean has the unique ability to reach out and connect with his audience proven during his highly successful “Hannitization of America Tour,” which brought hundreds of thousands of like-minded Americans together. He has visited markets big and small from coast to coast since his syndication in 2001.

Sean’s Freedom Concerts began in 2003 to raise awareness and funds for The Freedom Alliance, a charity which provides scholarships to the children of slain U.S. military personnel. In 2007 the concerts grew into five massive events resulting in over $10 million for The Freedom Alliance and were attended by over 60,000 people in Atlanta, San Diego, Dallas, Cincinnati, and New Jersey.

A gutsy talk-show host who always lands on the “right side” of the issues, Hannity is the host of the #1 9PM prime-time cable debate show “Hannity.” The executives at Fox were so confident in Sean’s ability to attract viewers that the #1 cable news network asked Sean to launch a weekend program. “Hannity’s America” kicked off on January 7, 2007 and immediately captured the #1 prime-time cable slot at 9PM on Sundays.

Sean Hannity’s energy, charisma and Reagan conservatism has scored high points with audiences and critics alike as he continues to be one of the hottest commodities in media.

Doug is passionate about radio. Ever since he was a freshman at Heidelberg College in Ohio, he has made it his life’s work to create quality programming that entertains, engages and enriche s radio listeners. In the process, Doug has created one of the largest and most successful independent radio organizations in the country.

But the road to success in radio is rarely easy. After graduation, Doug didn’t work full-time in radio. Instead, his early career paths exposed him to a wide variety of experiences – from teaching middle school English to running a number of family businesses – although he was never far from his true passion.

He worked on-air wherever and whenever he could – sometimes on 3 stations at the same time – weekends, evenings, whenever he got the chance -all the way from Boston to Providence, Rhode Island. In the early 1980s, while looking for his big break, he was Operations Director at WEEI-AM, a Boston news station,.

Finally, in 1988, he got the chance to do the radio show he dreamed about when he was chosen by American Radio Network to host a new program, GOOD DAY USA. Once again, the road wasn’t smooth. With ARN being battered by a series of ownership changes, Doug decided to risk everything to do the show he believed in – and took control of the program.

He changed the name to DOUG STEPHAN’S GOOD DAY, purchased his own satellite time, set up a studio in his home and then found radio stations to run the program. In the beginning, he even sold his own advertising. To support GOOD DAY, he worked on-air at national powerhouses such as KABC, Los Angeles and KMOX, St. Louis.

All of the hard work, vision and ingenuity paid off as DOUG STEPHAN’S GOOD DAY is currently heard on over 350 radio stations by over 3 and a half million listeners every week. Doug is now among the top national talk radio personalities according to TALKERS magazine.
His company, Stephan Multimedia, is the largest independent producer of talk radio programming in the country, with offices in New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Washington DC, and his reach has extended to Podcasting and the Internet.
But the statistics and growth are only a small part of Doug’s success story. The real story is the relationship that he has cultivated with his listeners.

As Doug says, ‘I love helping people start every day as a good day, which can include an offbeat slightly crazy story, a shot of humor, or the top news you need to know. Sometimes I like to describe the show as the fun, foibles and frustrations of day-to-day life – filtered through the psyches of both myself and the listener.

The listeners are so important because I am motivated to help people grow – and that includes me. I like to engage, provoke, entertain and inform – to stimulate, sometimes in unexpected ways. Some people even call me a contrarian. I like to think of myself as an entertainer with a mission’.

Doug Stephan is on the Board of Trustees at Heidelberg College and the 4H Foundation Board. He has received numerous industry awards and provided community service for Big Brothers. His children live and work in Los Angeles.

Kim’s weekly three-hour call-in talk radio show is heard (via her own national radio network called WestStar) on over 470 stations. In addition, she does a Digital Minute radio feature five days a week; has written ten books about life in the digital age; sends out close to 10 million e-mail newsletters weekly; and authors a widely syndicated newspaper column, which also runs in USA Today.com. She does all of this, while raising a son and operating a growing media empire, with her husband and associate, Barry Young.

“I am relentless in my pursuits,” says Kim. “It’s a lot of hard work, but when you dig what you do, it makes it a lot more fun.”

A pioneer in marketing and training for home computers, recently won the 2007 Gracie Award, voted by Talker’s Magazine “Woman of the Year” and the answer to a question in the game Trivial Pursuit, Kim has evolved into a national digital guru. “It’s not about techies and computer-troubleshooting anymore,” she says. “It’s now about a lifestyle – the lifestyle of a digital age.” Most recently, she was a featured speaker while attending Fortune Magazines’ 2009 Most Powerful Woman Summit, a prestigious meeting of the nation’s top CEOs including Yahoo!, Xerox, Dupont and Warren Buffett.

No overnight success

Kim has built a media legacy driven by her passion for “all things digital.” Born and raised in New Jersey, her father was a successful businessman. Her mother was part of the team that developed the UNIX operating system.

Business and computer technology were a staple at home. She fondly remembers: “When my father would ask me what I did in school, if I didn’t have anything noteworthy to tell him, he would make me read an article in the Wall Street Journal and then report back to him what I learned.”

It might not have been as much fun as playing with Ken and Barbie, but it made a lasting impression on Kim.

She graduated from high school at 16 and Arizona State University when she was 20. By then, she had set up a successful business, training people to use their computers.

“I’ll never forget one of my first classes. It had about 20 people in it, and in the front row was the president of a bank and next to him was an 8-year-old. I told the class to turn on their computers, and the kid leaned over to the bank president and said, ‘It’s that switch over there…’”

That business made Kim realize just how universal the computer age had become. She began envisioning her empire, which would come in less than 10 years.

After stints at IBM and AT&T in sales, Kim joined Unisys, selling mainframe systems to big clients, including Motorola, Hughes and, in particular, Honeywell. The latter was embroiled in a lawsuit with Unisys when Kim got the account.

“It was assumed I was going to die on the vine,” she remembers. But Kim sold Honeywell a system for $12 million, cash.

Leaves corporate life for good

With a nice commission, Kim decided to focus on a column about computers for the Arizona Business Gazette.

“I called this gal at that paper every day for a year,” she remembers. “I knew there was a need for a regular column on computers. No one was doing this.

“Eventually, I was given a small column to write, and soon after, I tried to syndicate it to other papers.” The newspaper column led to a call-in talk show about computers, which aired late at night on KFYI in Phoenix.

It was small beginnings, but the bug had bitten her. On Jan. 1, 1992, only seven years after graduating from college, she made a big career change: dishing out advice to consumers via print and radio outlets.

When she told her folks, she said, they were convinced she was out of her mind. The column and radio show combined earned her only $60 a week.

“My dad thought I was crazy,” she adds, laughing. “He offered to help carry me through, but I had the money from the big Unisys commission check, so I said I would make it on my own.”

Bill Handel’s weekend show, “Handel on the Law,” is bold, entertaining and addictive. Bill definitely knows his way around our wacky American legal system, and with a quick wit and razor sharp tongue, offers up advice to countless callers on a weekly basis. Syndicated nationally, Handel has amassed a loyal fan base that continues to grow. Bill Handel has been able to couple his passion for talk radio with his experience as a lawyer and the result is a unique blend of information and humor.

“Handel on the Law began broadcasting in 1985. I enjoy it more today than the day I started. Abusing callers, giving marginal legal advice and telling callers where to go is still probably the most enjoyable thing I do other than having intimate moments with my wife…No…It is the most enjoyable thing I do.”
