The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries Encourages “Open Season” on Coyotes

Coyotes are listed as a nuisance animal that are non-native to Virginia and pose a threat to livestock and small household pets. Coyotes are scattered throughout the region and are commonly spotted in the surrounding counties; and several have bounty programs in place including Bedford County. The lottery, in its second year, is a tool to curb the coyote population and is funded by businesses and organizations that act as sponsors.\ According to the News & Advance; the lottery has netted 97 coyote kills this year. There is no state bounty for coyotes; to see if there is a local bounty contact your county administrator’s office.
