According to preliminary results of the 2012 Census of Agriculture… Virginia farmers benefited from a boost in their products’ market value between 2007 and 2012. Farms across the state saw dramatic increases in both the market value of production and the average value of products sold per farm according to the of the Department of Agriculture. Virginia also showed a reversal in the loss of farm land with a gain of 3% in properties. Officials say while farm land has increased, the number of farms has decreased, meaning that farms are growing larger. Agriculture is Virginia’s largest industry; in 2012, the value of agriculture products sold totaled nearly $395- billion dollars.
