A single-vehicle accident Sunday afternoon sent five people to the hospital and caused the closure of U.S. 460 in Bedford. State Police say 70-year-old James Russell Girty Jr., was driving westbound on Route 460 when he ran off the right side of the road, overcorrected, drove through the median, and overturned in the eastbound lane. Authorities say Girty was not wearing a seatbelt and was injured; three other adult passengers and a small child were all taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. According to media outlets, Girty has been charged for failing to maintain proper control of his vehicle and failure to wear his seat belt. The crash remains under investigation.
