Child advocates joined lawmakers yesterday in an effort to make a case for funds and legislation to combat predators who commit crimes against children. A map reviewing eight crimes that occurred in the vicinity of U.S. 29 between Lynchburg and Northern Virginia shows similarities to the abduction and murder of Morgan Harrington outside a concert in Charlottesville in 2009. Among them include the disappearance of Alexis Murphy in Lovingston in August and the 2009 death of Cassandra Morton in Lynchburg. A national advocacy group is encouraging the General Assembly to establish “mandated multidisciplinary teams”. If approved, the legislation would require law enforcement and prosecutors in every locality to meet once a month to share information about local crimes against children.
