The brutal cold that put parts of the country in a deep freeze pushed customer demand for electricity to new heights for Appalachian Power. In a press release, AEP says its customers in Virginia, West Virginia and Tennessee established an unofficial all-time peak demand for electricity at 8 a.m. Tuesday. The Arctic cold mass that gripped the company’s service area saw demand rise to 8,410 megawatts. That tops the previous record set in January 2009. The new peak demand mark will be confirmed next month when additional metering information is available verify the consumer consumption. The company has about 1 million customers in the three states.
