All Hallows’ Eve Service
Friday, October 31, 2014
5:30 p.m.
Old City Cemetery Chapel
401 Taylor Street
Lynchburg, Virginia 24501
The annual All Hallows’ Eve service will be held in the Chapel at 5:30 p.m. on Halloween, Friday, October 31. The evening prayer service commemorates the dead and serves as a precursor to All Saints’ Day on November 1. That ancient Celtic holiday celebrated the first day of the year, the end of the harvest, and the beginning of winter. The All Hallows’ Eve service itself is spiritual and yet quirky with its elements of religious humor.
Coordinated by The Rev. Catharine W. Montgomery, Rector of Grace Memorial Episcopal Church, the service is from the Book of Occasional Services and will be presented by Clergy of the Lynchburg Convocation of Episcopal Churches.
Following the service, refreshments will be served by the candlelight of jack-o-lanterns outside next to the Chapel. The service is free and open to the public, but space is limited. Attendees are welcome to come in costume.
