An Amherst County deputy has lost his battle with pancreatic cancer. The Amherst County Sheriff’s office announced Monday that Deputy James “Mac” McAllister Jr. died on Sunday. McAllister was diagnosed in June 2013. That same year, he was recognized by the department for outstanding work in traffic enforcement. Sheriff Jimmy Ayers says he fought his disease with great determination and a constant desire to return quickly to his job. McAllister leaves behind a wife, two daughters, and two stepsons.
