Due to changes in training standards, the auxiliary police force of the Amherst Police Department has been dissolved. According to the New Era Progress, the March 1 elimination of the volunteer force follows a 2012 Virginia law that requires auxiliary officers to obtain the training standards that certified officers would have to meet. The department’s seven auxiliary officers supplemented the police department during special events. The town will likely honor the officers for their service at a future meeting of the Amherst Town Council.
