From Virginia State Police: Trooper R.M. Chambliss is investigating a fatal crash in Buckingham County. The crash occurred at 5:30 a.m., Thursday (March 24) on Route 24, approximately one mile east of Route 636. A vehicle was traveling west on Route 24 when a deer ran out in front of it. The vehicle struck the deer forcing the deer into the eastbound travel lane. A 1993 Toyota pickup truck was in the eastbound travel lane and struck the deer. The pickup truck then ran off the road and struck a tree. The driver of the pickup truck, James G. Pugh, 54, of Appomattox, Va., died at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt. The deer also did not survive. The driver of the first vehicle was not injured.
