american battlefield protection programThe purchase of historical property just outside the boundary of the Surrender Grounds in Appomattox is expected to be finalized this summer. The three-acre piece of land, where the last battle occurred before the end of the Civil War, is being purchased through a grant from the American Battlefield Protection Program. To date, the organization has preserved 30,000 acres of land; in an effort to protect historical skirmish sites; while preventing commercial and residential development.
