game inland fisheriesA Bedford County hunter was bitten by a black bear Saturday afternoon. 32 year old Dwayne Karnes and his dogs were part of a hunting parting in the area of Suck Mountain in Bedford when the dogs wandered off and confronted a 125-pound bear. Karns tried to protect the dogs but the bear turned on him and bit him on each arm. Forestry officials report, an increase in bear activity recently reported in Bedford and Amherst Counties. According to the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, while non-malicious, this attack is considered a provoked confrontation. It is the only instance this year in which someone has been bitten by a bear and officials say residents should not feel alarmed.
