In a special meeting Thursday night, the Bedford County school board voted to close the school effective June 30 of next year. A motion to close Moneta Elementary failed; the board allocated money for septic system repairs at that school instead. Both schools were considered for closure after a state-mandated efficiency study cited maintenance issues and declining enrollment in the Staunton River and Liberty attendance zones. The board is looking to close another school and has instructed staff to begin compiling maintenance data for Thaxton Elementary and Bedford Primary.
