According to the national Retail Merchants Association, studies have found that for each $1 spent at a local business, 45 cents is reinvested locally. In Central Virginia, RMA is gearing up to launch the Buy Local campaign, which encourages consumers to be aware of their spending habits, and to educate them on the economic benefits of spending their dollars locally. Local businesses add to a community by supplying jobs, hiring local people and paying taxes. Experts say spending at companies that have no ties to a community, results in little to no local revenue benefit. The trade association represents locally owned retail establishments and service providers in Lynchburg and the surrounding counties of Amherst, Bedford, Campbell, Nelson and Appomattox.
