Coast Guard to Honor Crew from 1887 Life-Saving Service

A memorial service will be held in the morning for five men who died in 1887 trying to rescue the crew of a ship that ran aground. The men worked for the U.S. Life-Saving Service, a forerunner of the U.S. Coast Guard. According to the Coast Guard’s website, members were transferring a crew from a life boat when a wave overturned both boats.
