Lynchburg City Council has endorsed the creation of a 34-acre conservation easement off Boonsboro Road. In the past, city officials have voiced concerns about easements because the status permanently shuts the door on future land use opportunities. The state, however, has been pushing to put more properties into easements and the Virginia Outdoors Foundation now holds agreements on an area of land roughly equal to the size of Rhode Island. The Lynchburg Planning Commission, which also supported the easement, intends to start crafting a new policy to help guide future easement decisions. Sources say the commission will discuss the process further during a meeting today.
