The Virginia Department of Transportation has concluded a series of studies and now construction can begin on a new public boat landing at Smith Mountain Lake. Appalachian Power originally proposed the public boat landing in 2010 as a way for the power company to meet new guidelines, set by the Federal Energy Regulatory Committee to improve public access for recreation to the lake. The landing will be located near the Westlake area—VDOT conducted several studies to assure that the road could handle an increase in traffic. According to the Smith Mountain Eagle, the boat landing is scheduled for completion this spring.
