The family of an Amherst County woman killed in her home in January filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against the man charged with murder in connection with the shooting. 49 year old, Cordell Lionel Carter Sr., is charged with first-degree murder, using a firearm in commission of a felony and possessing a firearm as a felon in the January shooting death of 30 year old Jennifer Johnson. According to the News & Advance, a suit filed in May by the victim’s cousin seeks $3 million in compensatory damages and $350,000 in punitive damages. The complaint lists the two sons of Jennifer Johnson as the statutory beneficiaries who “suffered … mental anguish, sorrow and solace, and the loss of society” by the loss of their mother.
