The recent homicide of an Amherst county mother has the YWCA’s Domestic Violence Prevention Center calling attention to two other recent cases involving area women. Arnita Cheatham was found dead at a Madison Heights motel in August. Her estranged husband has been charged with murder. Last month, Tammy Black, of Amherst, was killed at her home in Virginia Beach, allegedly by her husband in a murder-suicide. This week, 30-year-old Jennifer Johnson was shot and died Tuesday; the father of her son, Cordell Carter has been charged with her murder. Advocates with the local Center say domestic violence includes physical, emotional, sexual and verbal abuse — even the threat of such abuse — between people in a close relationship.
