Officials say it was just smoke that set off a fire alarm at Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest over the weekend. Volunteer firefighters from Forest responded around 5 Saturday afternoon. Media outlets report facility staff built a fire in one of the fireplaces in the basement; but due to a “chimney malfunction,” the smoke flooded out, setting off alarms. Sources say the flames were extinguished, the rooms were ventilated and no damage was caused to the historic home.
