A gas line break in Altavista Wednesday afternoon caused evacuations of homes and businesses. Traffic was blocked for over an hour and school buses were held at schools. The town’s fire officials say a contractor doing excavation work hit the 2-inch gas line.Columbia Gas was called and had two crews working on the break. By 3:30 p.m., the line had been patched. Officials say the weather, including wind, helped to disperse the gas.
