The United Way of Central Virginia has announced that Amherst County and the town of Bedford will receive state funding to assist governmental and nonprofit organizations within their locality to provide emergency food and shelter assistance to families in their community. The association or group must meet a number of qualifications to be eligible for the grants, such as being nonprofit, nondiscriminatory and having “demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter services.” A local board will determine how the money will be distributed.
