Virginia Department of Environmental Quality is investigating a 150-gallon heating oil spill off Campbell Avenue. The Lynchburg Fire on Sunday responded to the leak at a vacant home on Prince St. The News & Advance reports, the home, which was damaged by fire in December, may have been leaking oil for as long as a week or two after copper pipe was stolen off the property. According to the article, the oil traveled to a water retention pond along the Concord Turnpike. Hazmat crews placed oil-absorbing booms and absorbent pads along the creek and below the retention pond. The pond does drain into the James River, but officials say the oil has been contained to the pond.
