High Bridge Trail is slowly making its way to downtown Pamplin. In 2006, the trail became possible through Norfolk Southern’s donation of 31 miles of abandoned railroad. Since 2009, sections of trail have been open in various communities but stops just about a mile short of the depot. Because is wasn’t destroyed during the Civil War’s battle of High Bridge— hence union soldiers were able to pursue rebel forces through Farmville and ultimately to the surrender two days later in Appomattox. According to the Times Virginian, as of last week, the property for Norfolk Southern is still in negotiations with the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation to get the last mile of trail.
