Nearly two dozen people lost their lives in traffic accidents over Christmas and New Year’s. According to the Virginia State Police no fatal wrecks occurred in the Lynchburg area; however at least 20 people were killed in 19 separate crashes elsewhere across the state during the holidays. Alcohol contributed to at least three crashes, according to a news release. Six of the deceased were not wearing seat belts. The statistical period for the wrecks was from Dec. 21 to 25 and Dec. 28 to Jan. 1.
