A 30-day public comment period is underway regarding a proposed plan to clean up four waterways in Nelson and Amherst counties. Virginia Department of Environmental Quality officials met with citizens last month to outlined voluntary programs that could help remove Tye River, Hat Creek, Rucker Run and Piney River from the “Dirty Waters List” in eight years by reducing the levels of bacteria, such as E. coli in the water. The programs addressed both agricultural and residential solutions; the 44-page plan is available on DEQ’s website. Public comment is open until June 16.
